Imagine you’re asked to design a web browser,
How would you create a browser that protects user privacy? Without completely banning browser cookies? Remember, cookies can help enhance user experience and are crucial for all kinds of functions like analytics, login, and personalization. The developers at Firefix found an amazing solution. In today’s post, we’ll be covering it, as described in their blog post- Firefox rolls out Total Cookie Protection by default to all users worldwide.
Key Highlights
What are cookies- Cookies are small pieces of information websites store on your computer. Cookies only contain bits of text, not anything else. Read more
Why Cookies are crucial for websites- Cookies play all kinds of roles, from storing User/Session ID for seamless logins, to storing user preferences for personalization.
Why Cookies can be problematic- Certain cookies can be configured to track your behavior across the web in general. Advertisers use this to target you in campaigns. Clearly, this has a lot of privacy implications as well.
Firefox’s Solution- “Total Cookie Protection works by creating a separate “cookie jar” for each website you visit. Instead of allowing trackers to link up your behavior on multiple sites, they just get to see behavior on individual sites. Any time a website, or third-party content embedded in a website, deposits a cookie in your browser, that cookie is confined to the cookie jar assigned to only that website. No other websites can reach into the cookie jars that don’t belong to them and find out what the other websites’ cookies know about you — giving you freedom from invasive ads and reducing the amount of information companies gather about you. “
Financial Implications of this- From an economics perspective, this limits the supply of the data on you, making data on you more expensive. We have recently seen a bit of a slow down in the data-selling business, because of the intense competition in the domain. This will spark more fierce competition, and we will likely see a lot of data-sharing partnerships between firms etc. If you’re considering a job in the data, now would be a good time to jump in.
