Happy Friday y’all,
I’m sure you’re super ready to wild out over the weekend. Wouldn’t it be super awesome if you had even more money, to make your weekend depravities even crazier? Well, worry no more. I have an amazing video up ahead for you. Engineering with Utsav is a fantastic channel run by a former Senior Engineer at MS. He recently had a video on negotiating your salary and gaining the best offers.
Most of the advice was pretty standard, but his plan for putting it together was amazing. And there was one thing, in particular, he suggested that I hadn’t even thought of before. His experience and insight really shone through. I’ll summarize the most important points below so that you can decide whether you want to watch it.
The Highlights
The video covered these points-
Preparation is key- Your negotiation should start prior to finding the offer. Do the research, find the expected compensation bands, etc. One thing I loved is how he mentioned applying to places that meet your skills. Machine Learning is hot in Big Tech right now. C++ developers will be loved in the financial domain. Picking the right battlefield will make your life much easier.
Organize interviews in the same compensation band- This was where Utsav’s experience really shone through. He suggested organizing prospective companies (you’ll be interviewing at) in bands, arranged by typical compensation. Then organize the interviews with the companies of the same band together. This way their offers are likely to land around the same time.
Imagine you had two offers from companies in the S-Tier band (take FB and MS). Assume your MS offer is lower, but that’s where you want to go. You can simply ask Ms to try and match the offer. Since you’ve done your research, you know that MS is in the same band (and thus is more likely to match the offers). And having that offer makes your negotiation that much more potent.
Tell them to wait- Another important idea, it’s okay to ask Companies to wait. If you’re expecting another offer, it’s okay to let the companies know to wait for a week or two to evaluate the options. Most companies will be happy to wait till then.
