Hey y’all,
Writing this to give y’all a few very important updates. We’ll be covering the following-
Sam Altman has been fired from OpenAI.
Shadow Banned on IG
A Discord Server for our community + IRL Meetups
Sam Altman Fired
In their post, “OpenAI announces leadership transition” OpenAI announced that Sam Altman will no longer be the CEO of OpenAI (and will be leaving the Board of Directors). Apparently, Altman has been misleading the board-
Mr. Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.
I've been talking about how unsustainable OpenAI’s operations are for a while. A lot of their claims didn't square well with the business side of things. In that sense, the firing is a surprise, but not shocking. My guess is that the Dev Day announcements created all this hype but the increased visibility made it impossible to hide the issues in their operations. This is supported by OpenAI pausing new ChatGPT Plus Subscriptions. Investors are likely starting to realize how much money the whole operation was burning (and how OpenAI had to subsidize the users to attract subscriptions).
I will look into what happened in more detail. The article on that will come out in a few days so I have some time to research things and cut through the clutter. There is a lot of noise around this event already, and I don’t want to add to it with empty speculation. If you believe you have some insight into this, please do reach out.
Instagram Shadowban-
I've been shadowbanned on Instagram for my recent posts about political lobbying, unionization, child labor in Tech, and fighting mass surveillance. The impressions have been halved recently. This sucks, because I was really hoping to grow beyond just writing long-form articles. I’ve been trying my hand with TikTok and Instagram, to experiment with shorter-form content. This is discouraging, and if you know what I can do about it, please let me know. For now, I will probably switch focus to YouTube (out of TikTok, IG, and YT- YT has the best reception). I’ll do some TikTok to test out ideas for deeper dives and as summaries of important videos. If you’re on TikTok, follow me here
Discord Server for the cult
We have an official Discord Server for this community now. Join it here. Discord is a great tool for getting in touch with the community, arranging IRL Meetups, hosting discussions, and more (and it was the most popular option based on the poll). I hope to see you all there. I really enjoy interacting with y’all, and Discord would just make the process easier.
That’s it for this one.
Talk soon.
Peace
Devansh

My 2 cents: we need more longer form content, not more shorter form content. I am glad you're going to have to focus more on places like this, because the world really, really needs nuance today.
