Hello lovely subscribers,
As you know, I always share great resources that you can use to boost your interview preparation. I came across a fantastic mock Systems Design Interview. The Design Parking Garage is a fairly common question in the systems design Space.
As you watch and take notes, I want you to pay particular attention to how this man displays his technical knowledge. He is clearly knowledgeable in Data Storage and related protocols. He uses every opportunity to integrate his knowledge into the solution. His way of naturally slipping into extended conversations about his domain of expertise is something that will help. An underrated move is that little comment he throws about the debate whether the tables should be singular or plural. This shows that he has not only book knowledge, but interacts with other developers.
To do this, it first helps to know what your areas of expertise are. Many of my subs are more experienced people in their 30s. You guys know your domains well. Make sure you also keep one or two interesting discussions/inside jokes prepped. When you’re interacting with different apps/networks try to think about where your expertise would be useful here. This gets you into the habit of finding your expertise in every possible situation.
For the people earlier in their careers, similar advice applies. If you know what you’re interested in, start learning. If you don’t, find what you’re into. However, (esp. for entry-level) it is important for you to have a good breadth of knowledge. Senior people are given the excuse that they don’t work with certain aspects. Juniors might not need every detail in one domain, but they will need to at least show some knowledge of multiple domains to maximize chances (and deal with curve-balls better).
Either way, we kill all interviews.
