The CAP Theorem [System Design Sundays]
Happy Sunday y’all,
That rounds up another week where we have been working together. And let me say, it’s been an absolute pleasure working with you as you level up in your software development journey.
This week, we will be covering the super famous CAP Theorem. This is one of the most important ideas for you to know for your Systems Design Interviews. When it comes to questions/situations where you will be working on building distributed systems, the CAP theorem is a must.
Basics of the CAP theorem.
The CAP theorem states something simple- that a distributed system can deliver only two of these three characteristics: consistency, availability, and partition tolerance (the ‘C,’ ‘A’ and ‘P’ in CAP).
Depending on the needs of your system, you will choose different database solutions. The CAP theorem provides a nice clean framework for you to identify your needs. If you see different System Design Solutions online pick MongoDB for one problem and Cassandra for another, but couldn’t figure out why they did that, this theorem will provide the answer. Study this well.
To understand these concepts, and see which kinds of Databases you can use, I am linking a fantastic video by IBM Technology. It covers all the important concepts you need to know.
