Merry Christmas + Happy New Year y’all
2022 has been a great year for me and this newsletter. And for a lot of our readers, who have made amazing career gainzzz.
Once again wanted to thank y’all, because you made this possible.
Here is some important/interesting information going forward-
This newsletter is going on break till Jan 5th. This is to give you and me a well-needed break. I will still be available in case any of you want to reach me.
When you come back, some things will have changed. First is something that a lot of people have texted/emailed me about.
A start here section
Soon, this newsletter will have a start here section. This will be a section that will contain some of the most important posts that I recommend everyone should read. This way new readers (or people that need a refresher), can refer to everything in one place to hit the ground running.
This will also ensure that you don’t feel overwhelmed by the volume. Coupled with the search functionality, you will be able to find the posts that you should know/are most interesting to you. I will also take occasional 1-day breaks, to give you some time to catch up with the posts already covered.
You asked for AI Content
A lot of you have asked me to integrate more AI/Machine Learning content, so I will gladly oblige. It will not be the main focus of the newsletter, but I will sprinkle them it in more frequently (usually on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Sundays). I’ll keep the AI content relevant to a general audience (how certain things are accomplished, talking about misinformation, or about certain management challenges) as opposed to the more in-depth technical breakdowns that I have on my Medium and YouTube. Think of them as snippets to understand important ideas.
Some Interesting Numbers
We started this year with 108 readers. Right now, we’re close to 10,000.
This growth has been largely caused by 3 major factors. In Descending Order these are-
Partnerships with various institutions. This year, we have established partnerships with some established educational institutions. Am in talks with several organizations, both educational and professional. This has been the biggest driver for growth. However, this has also been consistently the most frustrating avenue as well. There have been a lot of broken commitments, where people promise things to me and then go radio silent. There have been mutli-hour meetings where the decision-makers seem very excited only to later go ghost. And there is the whole issue of egos and conflicting interests. For example, I offered to provide my newsletter to my University for free. This was turned down because (and I’m not making this up), “We charge a lot of money for tuition. If we were to endorse a newsletter like yours, then we would be admitting that our classes weren’t enough.” If you’re looking at this avenue for growth; expect a lot of wasted energy, broken commitements, and meetings. However, this approach scales very well, since growth is not just limited to what I put into it.
Substack Recommendations- Substack allows publications to recommend others. This is a great way of ensuring that your audience finds more high quality writing. It has been a priviledge to be recommended by two of the biggest names in AI Research and Machine Learning, Ahead of AI and The Sequence. It is a huge matter of trust for them to share my work with their audience (especially since I am a nobody). I’ll make sure to repay all the trust they have put into me. A lot of this has been made possible by your support, so thank you.
Content on other platforms- The third biggest source of subscriptions has been people finding my other content (LinkedIn, Medium, YouTube etc). Interestingly, while this has been the source where I have gotten most of my paid subscribers (especially from Medium).
I hope you will continue to be the coolest community on the internet and push this cult to everyone in your network. If you know anyone/any team that would benefit from this newsletter, now is a great time to share. The about section for this newsletter can be found here.
One of the most gratifying things about writing has been our amazing reader retention rate. We have retained 97% of our paying subscribers. Given the turbulent economic conditions of today, it is quite an honor that readers have continued to put their money into this newsletter. I try to keep every edition relevant and useful to you, beyond just the coding interviews. And based on your answers in my survey, it seems like you agree. If you want to add your thoughts, you can find the survey here.
Geographically, my content is most popular in the USA, followed by India. Western Europe is the next big source of readership for me. Seeing all the locations y’all are from is pretty surreal (this newsletter is truly global).
I really appreciate the support all of you have shown me. There are great things to come. I’ll catch y’all soon.
Stay Woke,
Go kill all,
Devansh <3
